September iNaturalist Vermont Photo-observation of the Month

Congratulations to Susan Elliott for winning the September 2015 iNaturalist Vermont photo-observation of the month contest. Her image of an Autumn Meadowhawk (Sympetrum vicinum), was the most popular photo-observation as measured by clicked ‘favs’. Visit iNaturalist Vermont, a project of the Vermont Atlas of Life, and you can vote for the October winner by clicking ‘fav’ on your favorite photo-observation. Make sure you get outdoors and record the biodiversity around you and submit your discoveries and you could be a winner this month! All dragonfly and damselfly iNaturalist observations each year are added to the Vermont Odonate Atlas. Learn more about the updated atlas at the VCE blog.

Adding Missing Public Places to Google Maps for a Better iNaturalist Experience

By Zac Cota

Has this ever happened to you? You go to post observations you made at your local park. You search for the name of the park under the "Where where you?" heading only to find it doesn't exist. You now have to find the location yourself which can be more time consuming. Because iNaturalist uses Google for its locations, if a place isn't in the Google Maps system, you won't be able to use it on iNaturalist. This makes posting more time consuming and perhaps less precise. Over the past week I have been adding my favorite public places into Google Maps, and you can too! The process is simple.

Go into Google Maps. In the search box, type in the name, town and state of the place you want to add. If it is not in the system, a link will drop down prompting you to "Add a missing business or landmark to Google Maps". Once you click the link a marker will appear which you can move to the exact location. You will also have to provide the name, address, and category of the new place. Once submitted the suggestion gets reviewed and you will get an email within a few days.

Thanks for helping to build the system that allows everyone to use Google Maps based programs more efficiently.

A Field Guide to October

October is a month of change. The leaves slip from green to gold. Then, suddenly, they all seem to drift to the ground. The trees are nearly naked once again and ‘stick season’ has arrived. So here’s your field guide to some moments that you might not otherwise notice during these few weeks that feature yellow-brown hills beneath a deep blue sky (with the last Monarchs fluttering southward). Read the post on the VCE blog...
