Epic Seed Swaps and Winter Sowing Keep the MN SEED Community Busy in Winter

It’s been a busy winter for the MN SEED community! On January 28th, National Seed Swap Day, we held our first in person MN SEED seed swap of 2023! Seed stewards and gardeners from Wisconsin and Minnesota gathered to share seeds and knowledge for a few hours on a bitter winter day. Thanks to Hamline University for hosting this cozy gathering! We also held three winter sowing workshops. Our gratitude to many community volunteers who continued to pack seeds for distribution at our workshops, in little free library collections, at community events, and in winter sowing kits in support of the Lawns to Legumes Neighborhood Demonstration Project along the Pierce Butler corridor called the Bee Line (https://www.hamlinemidway.org/beeline) You can find some fun photos of our community gatherings to share seeds, to learn more about winter sowing and planting hundreds of mini green houses of locally adapted native plant seeds at this link (https://photos.app.goo.gl/ajc9STKM5P8XDsf6A). As always thank you to Capitol Region Watershed District for supporting the MN SEED Project and for hosting the last MN SEED winter sowing workshop. Also to Gibbs Farm for hosting the first winter sowing workshop and to Metro Blooms for inviting MN SEED to share winter sowing with the Green Garden Bakery crew and the residents of Heritage Park. Stay tuned for upcoming in person opportunities to explore our emerging native plant communities and all they support!

Spring Ephemera Walk Set for Wednesday 4/26, 5:30-6:30 pm at the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom for the MNSEED Community

Britt Marie Forsberg, master naturalist and UMN educator and Elizabeth will act as guides to the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom and all the early Spring plants emerging before the tree canopy leafs out. Come practice your plant identification skills and see which species take advantage of this very  early brief period of time to bloom. We’ll meet at the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Fireplace at 5:30 and explore from there. Please email MNSEED@Northerngardener.org to save a spot. This event is free and open to our growing community but we do need to hear if you are coming. Tour capacity is 25 participants.
The Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom is a series of trails with 8 Minnesota biomes represented. For more information about CWOC and its resources you can visit their website at http://www.comowoodlandoutdoorclassroom.org/natural-resource-tour.html.
