The City Nature Challenge starts today (on Maui) - Some tips for Finding "Nature at Home"

Thanks to our proximity to the international date line, we are the last region to start the CNC, but also the last to finish ... so it all works out in the end. ;) The observation phase of the CNC started at midnight last night and runs through the weekend and will wrap up on Monday night, at midnight.

As a reminder, this year's CNC is really focused on bringing our community together to enjoy nature, and recognizing that most of us will spend a lot of time at home, the CNC global organizers have put together a "Nature at Home" guide to find nature around your home: https://citynaturechallenge.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Exploring-Nature-in-and-around-your-home.pdf

While we encourage you to download the guide, some things to consider:

Look under rocks or logs around your house. You can also put flat objects on soil or pavement and come check them after a day or two.

Look to see who shows up around outside lights at night. Hanging a sheet on the wall by the light helps both seeing the visitors and taking better pictures.

If you are up early, listen for bird calls. You can take a short video clip and post it as part of your observations. There are a lot of dedicated birders that will help figure out your bird calls, even if you are not sure what you recorded.
