Today Wraps up the Observation Phase of the Global City Nature Challenge

Once again, those of us living on Maui will be the last people to make observations during this year's City Nature Challenge. Thanks to those of you have have contributed so far and don't forget that you have until May 4 to upload and ID any photos that you took between April 24-27 for inclusion in the CNC. We will be hosting a couple of ID parties during the April 29-May 4 Identification Phase, so stay tuned.

The City Nature Challenge starts today (on Maui) - Some tips for Finding "Nature at Home"

Thanks to our proximity to the international date line, we are the last region to start the CNC, but also the last to finish ... so it all works out in the end. ;) The observation phase of the CNC started at midnight last night and runs through the weekend and will wrap up on Monday night, at midnight.

As a reminder, this year's CNC is really focused on bringing our community together to enjoy nature, and recognizing that most of us will spend a lot of time at home, the CNC global organizers have put together a "Nature at Home" guide to find nature around your home: https://citynaturechallenge.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Exploring-Nature-in-and-around-your-home.pdf

While we encourage you to download the guide, some things to consider:

Look under rocks or logs around your house. You can also put flat objects on soil or pavement and come check them after a day or two.

Look to see who shows up around outside lights at night. Hanging a sheet on the wall by the light helps both seeing the visitors and taking better pictures.

If you are up early, listen for bird calls. You can take a short video clip and post it as part of your observations. There are a lot of dedicated birders that will help figure out your bird calls, even if you are not sure what you recorded.

More tips in the guide: https://citynaturechallenge.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Exploring-Nature-in-and-around-your-home.pdf

So this CNC, stay away from people, get close to nature and good luck!

City Nature Challenge is going to be a group effort this year.

In the face of the interesting times we find ourselves living in, the organizers of the CNC have decided that this year's CNC will not be a challenge, but rather a way for all naturalists to come together (virtually) and explore nature where you live. The organizers have recognized the limitations that the current pandemic has placed on many of us and in some cities, the event has been cancelled. The primary guidance is to follow local behavior change requirements and only participate to the extent you are comfortable doing so. Learn more about CNC recommendations here: https://citynaturechallenge.org/covid19/

For now, we still do have access on Maui to some trails and the ocean, so if you have access to these areas, feel free to document observations in these environment.

Given the reduced access to areas that we would typically explore for new observations during the challenge, participants are encouraged to focus on the wildlife that exists around their backyard or even in their house. If this is the mode you are comfortable operating in, here are some suggestions about how to bring wildlife to you at home: (PDF download) https://citynaturechallenge.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Exploring-Nature-in-and-around-your-home.pdf

If you do decide to focus on wildlife around your house, you may want to 'obscure' your observation locations. This makes your observation visible as an area (10 km sq.) rather than a point. What this means is that your observation still shows up as being seen on Maui, and, for example, Wailuku, but can't be pinpointed any further. You can learn more about the details here: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/geoprivacy

Need help with iNaturalist? Join us for free training sessions.

Aloha-
As we start ramping up toward the weekend-long City Nature Challenge here in Maui, one of the biggest hurdles tends to be not being familiar with the iNaturalist application. We are in the process of developing some videos to help you get familiar with the app, but also consider joining us for one of our Meetup sessions, where you can get actual people to help you get the app set up and get guidance on how to use it. Join us on Meetup.com here: https://www.meetup.com/Maui-Nui-Natural-History/ Hope to see you soon!
