Newton Campus Walk September 22, 2021

I was walking around Newton Campus and usually, I see squirrels or chipmunks but I saw a rabbit right in front of me. I took a quick picture before it ran/ hopped away very quickly. This was a wild/ natural organism within a landscaped area of the campus. It was seen running underneath the bushes on the sides of the buildings. I think it always brightens up my day to know that humans are not the only living things around us and a moving living thing that I don't see often definitely was a small bit of happiness in my day. The weather was clear, but not too sunny or too hot. I think it was ideal weather for the rabbit to come out and take a walk as well.

Pine Tree Reserve September 29, 2021

I walked and stayed around 1.5 hours in the pine tree reserve with one other friend. It was pretty chilly today and I think it's finally starting to shift from hot to cool weather. I did not want to record as many cultured flowers but some of the wildlife living there was wild and were living in this cultured habitat. It was a pine tree reserve so it was little and semi-natural. There was also a trail for walking and tall lights, so that part was not natural. However, there was less structure and management of how the plants were placed. Although I did notice the trees, they were higher up and not the main focus of what I was focusing on and looking at. They just seemed like walls and ceilings encompassing the whole area. I did not notice that there was this much variety in insects on campus because I was never looking for them. I think I was not as surprised to see squirrels or clovers but I was surprised to see the butterflies, caterpillars, and mushrooms. The walk made me think about the cultural ecosystem services we learned in class and how if it was converted to money value it would be around 33 trillion dollars. There is so much value in finding natural beauty in the ever-changing non-human-made environment. The weather made this walk so much more pleasing and I got to take in everything.
