This is my best guess, but he doesn't have a tufted tail.
Way larger than any of our Peromyscus...I've live-trapped this species many times previously.
I saw 3 roadkilled kangaroo rats on this road but this was the best of shape of all three. It still had food in its mouth! When driving by the same spot about 45 minutes later, the kangaroo rat was gone and I saw a raven with something in its mouth - I think one of them!
