CV-suggested. Seen in the mine. Only living organism spotted there, and only a single one this time.
When it swam, it moved almost shrimplike - going in the direction of its tail as opposed to the head.

Two trees about 5 feet apart, each with one tall hole and a couple smaller holes. Both dead trees show holes from multiple types of wood- or bark-boring bugs. The holes have long scrape-like marks along the edges. Woodpecker holes? Did a woodpecker make a hole that some other creature later scraped out further? Why the tall and short holes?

(the young deer haltingly came up to look, occasionally dipping their heads slightly to sniff and changing their minds, and the skunk just eventually got tired of this nonsense and scuttered off)
