Motukaraka Island, aka Flat Island, is a short distance from Beachlands, Auckland. 5.6656 hectares, the island can be reached 2-3 hours either side of low tide along a raised shellbank. Motukaraka was historically a Ngati Paoa pa site and was gazetted on 18 March 1905, becoming the first historic category Scenic Reserve in New Zealand.
The island was ravaged by a fire that burnt for three days in 1965 which destroyed most of the vegetation apart from a few coastal pohutukawa. Several council and volunteer efforts to replant natives and rid the island of mammalian pests have taken place over the years, but conservation interest has waned and the island is overridden with pest plants and mammals.
The purpose of this project is to document the flora & fauna of the island including the surrounding reefs and mudflats which are home to a wide variety of marine species and wading birds.
