Discovery the breeding birds on campus! GSBBS aims to document confirmed breeding species on the George School campus as part of the 3rd Pennsylvania Bird Atlas, a 5 year effort of mapping and monitoring breeding species status across the state.
Anyone is welcome to submit photos or descriptions of confirmed breeding behavior of birds on GS grounds. See Appendix A of this handbook for a description of breeding codes and how to use them, and this chart for rough breeding timelines for PA birds. The most frequently used codes will be Occupied Nest, Carrying Nesting Material, and Carrying Food, and Recently Fledged Young.
Feel free to include photos of any nests or interesting behavior, or brief descriptions on the location of the nest. You don't need to be able to identify any birds! Simply including Aves sp. (the taxon for all birds) is perfectly OK and community ID can help narrow it down to species. When in doubt, don't hesitate to post an observation! All confirmed observations will also be recorded on the PBA3 eBird portal.
Last but not least, please follow ethical birding guidelines; don't go too close to nests, minimize disturbance to roosts, fledgling, and birds defending territory, and be careful when walking off trails in the forests (some birds nest on the ground!). Enjoy!
