Rankings Feb 7-13

Hi everyone!

We've been through six weeks together. It's been a few more weeks since I last asked -- what new things have you learned? I'd love to hear about it :)

Remember, slow and steady -- this is a marathon, not a sprint. Take breaks, drink plenty of water, and stand up and stretch periodically. You can do it!

First of all, Total% ... what have we done together, in this short span of time?

59 people have made a total of 20,908 IDs!
Over the span of the entire competition, that's 125,288* IDs! Wow!
*real number is actually higher due to our previously mentioned Saturday counting error. We'll probably calculate the real total at the end of the competition.

And now, the grand reveal... what is Mystery% this week??

If you are one of the top 4 (eligible winners) in any category, you win either:
an Animal Crossing design code for a custom iNat shirt
or
a link to a Gerald-themed meme of my choice.
PM @trh_blue with your choice.

As usual the full rankings are here. Only two more weeks... how exciting...

The hint for next week's Mystery% is:
Before iNaturalist was born

Only two weeks left? I don't think I'll be able to stop when it's March. This is fun!

Thanks Lynn :) It's possible I might do another round, probably changing up the rules/categories/participants. I haven't decided--any suggestions are welcome.

as for myself, I'm going to be pretty busy in March and April, so if there's an event then I'll be taking more of a back seat until I've got the time again. in any case, we'd probably want a week or two in between to make needed improvements and adjustments

Well, as someone in the northeastern US, spring begins in March (OK, OK, late April really, but I pretend it starts in March), then there's the City Nature Challenge in April, then spring REALLY starts and it's full steam ahead till October or November. In other words, it's hard to find free moments after this.

On the other hand, there is that week after the field portion of the City Nature Challenge ends, when we're all supposed to be posting our observations and making IDs anyway - we could make a competition out of IDing CNC observations, maybe?

Or is there a way to focus on the under-identified taxa? Or places? Corral various experts to write up journal posts for, say, common riverine odonate exuviae in the northeast US (raises hand) or "easy" moths or lichens or whatever?

"we could make a competition out of IDing CNC observations, maybe?" I did think of that and I rather like the idea. Obviously if I were to do a workshop on common plants it would be easiest for me to target my local CNC teams.

The best thing about this is that CNC teams already have real, working projects tracking their obs, which in turn would make tracking IDs easier (or at least give us something official to check our work against.)

Ill be looking for feedback before whatever is next. I want the focus to be on forming habits / consistency / self-improvement, rather than quantity in any case. In my opinion it's way better to have ten people doing ten IDs every day than one person doing 100 IDs every day. Though of course we need some of both.

Also I kind of want CNC to be its own thing but that's just my opinion

What does +2.8M more mean? between the lot of us we can't have identified more than about 125,000 observations...

Publicado por astra_the_dragon hace más de 3 años

I saw that too and that is why I said it was not limited to since January 1st. My assumption is it is the sum of all identification of each user since they joined. No small feat but maybe I should see if I can limit the result somehow. Repost or replace if I can correct?

I just took out that comment because it is confusing. I got a result that says around 91k but that is confusing too because it is not counting identification but rather observations - and more than one of us can identify the same observation. Again confusing so I'll just leave it out. Plus I just realized the involved users is a bit of a moving target as the list is now shorter than it was.

Oh. in that case it makes sense. we've got some really heavy hitters in the group. I'm glad we've been getting more people into the world of identifying though :)

that gives me some cool ideas for final prizes, but I've barely been keeping up with this as it is. Lots of life/family/health drama going on. Amy and the other co-admins have been amazing. But even so, some prizes may be late.... or very late.

Ideas sound exciting. Sorry to hear of all of that is going on. Always great to have other things to occupy one's mind and time. Personally I'm not overly concerned about timing of prizes - virtual works for me - I'm having fun IDing and making projects and Projects to help with my IDing.
