https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/am-looking-for-some-test-users-of-an-identification-app/430

On different occasions in the forum I have now seen it mentioned that there is a growing discrepancy in numbers between the amount of observers and identifiers.

From my experience the Identification tool on the homepage is already extremely well done . For some specific tasks though, e.g. identifying lots of observations coarsely, I think there might be some improvements. I would like to help to make identifying a bit easier and a bit more fun.

I am a smartphone app developer and have made a rough “tinder” like identifying app. For now I have followed only my own needs in the development. However, I am looking for some people who want to try it out and give me some feedback to see if that is something that the community could possibly use. Also to see where it would need to be developed further.

If you are interested wave here or better send me a DM in iNat. Currently, I have an iPhone and Android version to test.

I know I can get a bit discouraged sometimes when the first batch of observations I see in Identify are all “picked over”, either because they’re all species that are difficult to identify, or the photos aren’t high quality or sufficient for showing diagnostic characters, or something else. A few tricks for finding more interesting/IDable/fun observations to identify:

Any other tricks you have for making identifying more fun/interesting?

Plenty of filters to play around with:

As I’ve started using this, my technique is to coarsely id the ones I know I can go finer with. After doing that for a bit, I pull up this view on desktop:

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?reviewed=true&order_by=updated_at&lrank=kingdom&per_page=100 1

This view pulls up all the ones I just id’d to go back over for both refinement and checking. The checking step is necessary for me because besides catching my inevitable mistakes, I like to zoom in on many things to doublecheck for birds in trees etc. Even with my extra step that lengthens the id process, I feel the overall process is more efficient for me than without using the app.

An in-app zoom function (pinch-expand?) would be handy if doable.

Yes.

You can go to the identify page, set the filter for your observations, check all the quality grades, and set the Without Annotation field to Alive or Dead = Any

This will show you all your observations that don’t have Alive or Dead annotated.

https://www.inaturalist.org/blog/42626-we-passed-300-000-species-observed-on-inaturalist#comments

  1. May 2017 Model 1
  2. Aug 2017 Model 2
  3. Jan 2018 Model 3
  4. Feb 2019 Model 4
  5. Sep 2019 Model 5
  6. Mar 2020 Model 6

Training

Training Set 1

In deze groep zitten geidentificeerde met

  3. vision-based ID
  4. Gebruik geen fotos van IDs by users with X maverick IDs

Training your own with https://www.kaggle.com/c/inaturalist-challenge-at-fgvc-2017

Croppen van fotos, Volgorde, Best Photo First

Best Photo First

In 2017 the amount of recognised species was 20.000 and now it is still.....20.000?

Neural Networks (specifically, VGG16) pre-trained on the ImageNet dataset with Python and the Keras deep learning library.

The pre-trained networks inside of Keras are capable of recognizing 1,000 different object categories, similar to objects we encounter in our day-to-day lives with high accuracy.

Back then, the pre-trained ImageNet models were separate from the core Keras library, requiring us to clone a free-standing GitHub repo and then manually copy the code into our projects.

This solution worked well enough; however, since my original blog post was published, the pre-trained networks (VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, Inception V3, and Xception) have been fully integrated into the Keras core (no need to clone down a separate repo anymore) — these implementations can be found inside the applications sub-module.

Because of this, I’ve decided to create a new, updated tutorial that demonstrates how to utilize these state-of-the-art networks in your own classification projects.

Specifically, we’ll create a special Python script that can load any of these networks using either a TensorFlow or Theano backend, and then classify your own custom input images.

To learn more about classifying images with VGGNet, ResNet, Inception, and Xception, just keep reading.

Xception: Implementing from scratch using Tensorflow
Even better than Inception
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have come a long way, from the LeNet-style, AlexNet, VGG models, which used simple stacks of convolutional layers for feature extraction and max-pooling layers for spatial sub-sampling, stacked one after the other, to Inception and ResNet networks which use skip connections and multiple convolutional and max-pooling blocks in each layer. Since its introduction, one of the best networks in computer vision has been the Inception network. The Inception model uses a stack of modules, each module containing a bunch of feature extractors, which allow them to learn richer representations with fewer parameters.

Inthis story, Xception [1] by Google, stands for Extreme version of Inception, is reviewed. With a modified depthwise separable convolution, it is even better than Inception-v3 2 for both ImageNet ILSVRC and JFT datasets. Though it is a 2017 CVPR paper which was just published last year, it’s already had more than 300 citations when I was writing this story. (Sik-Ho Tsang @ Medium)

For those of you who may not know, the “suggest an ID” bar accepts partial names, by producing a list of “closest matches”. Thus, eup mac becomes Euphorbia maculata, mall becomes Anas platyrhynchos (ie Mallard), and so on.

I started a spreadsheet of shortcuts! Specifically, short ones, one to three letters or maybe four.

Thought it might be a useful resource for anyone who does a lot of IDs, especially if you’re doing coarse identifications. Maybe you’ll find a neat shortcut you wouldn’t have thought of. There are some weird surprises in there (q q = Chelicerata??).
Please help me fill it in. As it gets longer and more complete, it’ll be more useful.

nor moc = northern mockingbird, bla pho = black Phoebe, cal scr = California scrub jay, ocr sea = ochre sea star, pac pur = pacific purple sea urchin, etc.
there were a shorter way to fill in the ‘Euphorbia’ species that I’m constantly typing”. Then memorize a relevant listed string for use, or contribute one if you figure out a good shortcut. Sounds handy, great

Berekening WarmtePomp Vermogen bij 3m3 gas/dag, 800m3/jaar

.

Rekenvoorbeeld besparing hybride warmtepomp
• Kosten elektra = € 0,2255/kWh 600 m³ aardgas x 9,77 = 7.816 kWh.

But wait, there's more!

Code Output
`code` code

this is
a table

The important bit is the row of hyphens below the header row.

We're supporting most of basic Markdown formatting, plus the tables extension, even though we don't have buttons for all those things.

It's also worth noting that we're supporting Markdown on comments, identifications, journal posts, and mostly on user profiles and project descriptions (you may run into trouble if that text is being truncated as it is on the project detail page). We're also supporting Markdown in the mobile apps for comments and IDs right now, even though we don't have the formatting buttons there. Mobile support for Markdown in user profiles, project descriptions, and journal posts is a work in progress (bold, italic, and links work fine, lists and tables not quite). We're still supporting HTML like we used to, but we're parsing it a bit more striclty than we used to. There are also a few weird cases where past text may now be formatted incorrectly, e.g. if you (like me) were in the habit of listing traces through keys like this,

1. Hairy patella
4. Red tail
18. Falcate toes

you'll need to switch to something like

1\. Hairy patella
4\. Red tail
18\. Falcate toes

Finally, thanks to everyone who chimed in on the Forum about this. Also, huge kudos to todtb for contributing the keyboard shortcuts for the text editor and for adding it to Identify (he's also working on making the text editor available when editing comments and identification remarks). He just volunteered to do both and did a great job, so thank you!

https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/145308-Spinus-psaltria

As a fairly novice birder, I like to use the seasonality diagrams as a gut check to try and estimate things like the breeding cycle of new birds I’ve encountered (is this a juvenile? is that a female mallard or a male outside of breeding season?), but it’s very difficult when the data is dominated by “no annotation”. It would be nice to have a checkbox for removing the “no annotation” chart.

33-Trekvogels Webinar Het Zwin Zondag 22 November 2020

Trekvogelsymposium - webinar 22/11/20 13:00 - 16:30

Update 26 oktober 2020:
https://www.zwin.be/sites/www.zwin.be/files/files/Vragen%20en%20antwoorden_trekvogelsymposium%2022%20november%202020.pdf

Leo Zwarts
Leo Zwarts is mede-auteur van het onvolprezen boek ‘Living on the Edge’.

https://podcastluisteren.nl/pod/Fwiet-Fwiet Tweet! Tweet! / Fwiet! Fwiet! is a birding podcast made by Begijn Le Bleu.
De boommarter komt even meegluren over onze schouders.

On the Discord chat platform, we have developed a bot called Dronefly for accessing iNat in conversations. To use it, join a Discord server where it is present and try some of the examples explained in this tutorial.

In the screenshots below, you will find conversations between various of our users and the Dronefly bot. Each conversation shows a line typed by the user followed by the bot’s response. Except for link previews, the user typically starts their message with the command prefix, which is a comma (,) immediately followed with a command and then its parameters. For example, in the second screenshot you can see ,sp used to search for a species matching the parameter.

The main ways to interact with the bot are illustrated below.

Observations

Just cut-and-paste an observation link in any channel. This is one of the few texts Dronefly responds to without being specifically requested for a response via a command starting with a comma. Dronefly responds to observation links to supplement Discord’s own automatic image preview with a summary of the important information on the page.

Taxonomy

Type enough words to the ,taxon command (abbreviated ,t) to match. To narrow it down, type the name of the rank. You can also use in to match within another taxon, e.g. ,t prunella in birds to distinguish from Prunella (self-heals). Basic usage is shown below using ,sp, a shortcut for ,taxon species. See ,help taxon for more examples.

image

You’ll notice a list of iNat user ids at the bottom with counts of observations & species (actually leaf taxon nodes, as iNat counts taxa). To help others in the conversation review & compare their observations of that taxon, you may click the buttons on the bottom to add or remove yourself or any other user who has shared their iNat profile.

Images

Use the ,image command (abbrevated ,img) to show a taxon’s default image.

image

Sounds

Any observation that has a sound will preview the first one. On the desktop, this shows as an inline player. On mobile, tap the link to download & play on your usual audio player.

Maps

A popular bot feature requested from our Discord users is to map the ranges of multiple taxa together. Use the ,map command, followed by a comma-delimited list of taxa.

image

Note: to better see where ranges overlap, individual map layers can be toggled. Look for the “Overlays” icon in the upper right corner and hover over it to open the menu, then tick or untick the checkboxes.

Relatedness

To determine the common ancestor of multiple taxa, use the ,related command:

image

More information about a display

To show another image for the most recently shown observation, use ,last obs img:

image

Numerous other ,last subcommands be used to retrieve other information about a taxon or an observation. See ,help last to list more examples.

Learning more commands

You can type ,help iNat and the bot will respond with an index of all of the commands it can respond to. You can use the ,help command to get help for each command and subcommand (i.e. multi-word commands arranged in a hierarchy under the main command). For example, ,help last for help with the ,last command and to show its subcommands, ,help last obs, for help with the ,last obs subcommand, and to show its subcommands, etc.

image

Where do I go to use all this?

You’re welcome to join the unofficial iNaturalist Discord server with this invite link:

https://discord.gg/C57VKVU

Where can I download it?

While most users will simply want to interact with Dronefly already running on Discord, if you’re a developer, you might want to download it & modify it. You can find the project on Github:

https://github.com/synrg/dronefly

Thanks

Thanks to all of the iNat Discord server users for your feature suggestions, testing & feedback that has helped shaped the bot to meet your needs. There are too many of you to list you all!

Some of you have also gone one step further and posted issues to the public issues system & submitted patches which are now included in the code. Thanks for all your contributions!

Thanks also to the Red Discord Bot developers and user community who have written & maintain the bot framework that powers Dronefly. Not only have the produced excellent code without which Dronefly could not exist, but also have personally given me some of their time to review my code & ideas as we worked out the kinks and added new features.

And of course, thanks to the iNaturalist devs who have also been very quick to respond & patient with me as I (sometimes clumsily) have tried to explain what I’m doing & the issues that have arisen while trying to use the iNat API. They’ve been very responsive squashing bugs, taking time to explain how things work, and even adding features to the API that made my job easier & made it possible for me to roll out more features to our users.

There is an unofficial Discord server, run by some pretty neat folks. Here’s the link to join:

https://discord.gg/uskv2yx 264

Come on over and join the fun.

I’m not sure how to edit the original post, but I wanted to note that the invite link has since changed: https://discord.gg/eCD4WvT

Jan Been Jan Been
Verslaggever
