Featured Observation: Burrowing Owl, Alberta

This week's featured observation is a Burrowing owl, spotted by @mldahl in Alberta in September

Lauren Bortolotti at the Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research weighed in on this rare (and spooky!) nighttime sighting:
“With fewer than 300 individuals in the Canadian population of Burrowing Owls, spotting one is a rare and special treat! Populations of this endangered species originally declined due to conversion of their grassland habitat, but they face ongoing threats from other human pressures. Conservation of remaining unfragmented grassland habitat is one crucial need to prevent further declines of Burrowing Owls.”

"Avec moins de 300 individus dans la population canadienne de Chevêches des terriers, en apercevoir une est un plaisir rare et spécial ! Les populations de cette espèce en danger de disparition ont d'abord décliné en raison de la conversion de leur habitat de prairie, mais elles font face à des menaces constantes provenant d'autres pressions humaines. La conservation de l'habitat de prairie non fragmenté restant est un besoin crucial pour prévenir d'autres déclins de la Chevêche des terriers."
