Diario del proyecto City Nature Challenge 2021: Bonner County, ID

The primary purpose of the City Nature Challenge: Bonner County (CNCBC) is to document the incredible biodiversity in the area, while spotlighting the need to identify, preserve and restore critical habitat for threatened species.

A secondary purpose is to highlight the importance of the native plants that support the food web for local species, including pollinators. One thing that you can easily do is a bioblitz on your own property (with either iNaturalist or Seek). Find out what’s there! If you haven’t already created a free iNaturalist account so that you can participate in the CNCBC, go here: https://www.inaturalist.org/signup.

To encourage people to be a little more ambitious and explore the biodiversity richness throughout the county, the Pend Oreille Chapter of the Idaho Master Naturalists is going to:
1) Make a life size silhouette of a Sasquatch, and hide it in 4 different places around the county, on each of the 4 days of the Challenge. Her name is Sassy. (A photo of Sassy will be posted here once it’s completed so you’ll know what to look for.)
2) Make 4 small “CNCBC 2021” Sasquatch trophies to be given to the first person to find Sassy -and- make 20 observations of other species on each day of the competition (photos of the trophies will be posted next Sunday). A new location clue will be posted on this Facebook Page, and on the iNaturalist Project Page, the evening before to give you a general idea of where to look the next day.
3) Make a taller “CNCBC Champ 2021” Sasquatch trophy to be awarded to the person who makes the most unique species observations over the four-day period (photo of the trophy will be posted next Sunday).

To make things even more interesting, in addition to the “competition” between all the worldwide CNCs, a friendly regional competition will take place between Boise, Bonner County, and Red Lodge, MT (Carbon County).

The organizers in Red Lodge are making a unique “Northern Rocky Mountain Challenge” (NRMC) trophy for the winner of our mini-competition (photo of the trophy coming soon). For the trophy, each Challenge has a magnetic mascot: Peregrine Falcon for Boise, Sasquatch for Bonner County, and Moose for Red Lodge (removable magnets were chosen in the event that other area/regional Challenges are formed, and want to compete in the future). The NRMC trophy will be awarded to the Challenge that has the most participants per capita per project. (Participants must have an iNaturalist account, so that excludes children under the age of 13. Younger children can participate using a group account (i.e., with a class using a teacher’s account), or by helping someone with an iNaturalist account by finding things on their own using the Seek app.)

On May 10, 2021, the results will be announced.
1) There will be a Facebook Live “City Nature Challenge Awards Ceremony” at 4:00 PM (https://www.facebook.com/events/782272925738524) to announce the local competition winners, and the mini-competition regional winner. If Bonner County wins the regional competition, Mike Bauer of the East Bonner County Library District will accept the NRMC trophy, and it will be kept and displayed at the library, but will be rotated to different locations around the county.
2) The Sasquatch trophies winners will be announced, and the trophies can be picked up at the library.
3) Sassy will be at the library, so come by and have your picture taken with her!
4) After the CNCBC is over, Sassy will be primarily kept at the WaterLife Discovery Center in Sagle, but will be rotated around the county to keep interest high for future bioblitzes.

She made her debut recently at the WaterLife Discovery Center in Sagle, the home base for the Pend Oreille Chapter of the Idaho Master Naturalists. The chapter commissioned her, along with the mini Sasquatch trophies (currently on display at the East Bonner County Library), for use in the City Nature Challenge: Bonner County (CNCBC).

She’s about 7’ tall, and weighs in at about 15 lbs. She’s only ¾” wide, so she’s a little fragile. Since her debut, she’s been roaming Bonner County, looking for places to hide during the CNCBC. She’s found 4 good spots. To win one of the “CNCBC 2021” Sasquatch trophies, you have be the first person to find her -and- 20 different species, and upload your observations using the iNaturalist app. She’ll be at each location until 6:30 PM each of the 4 days of the CNCBC (Friday April 30 – Monday May 3), then she’ll be moved to the next location.

[Note: To qualify, send an email with CNCBC 2021 in the Subject line to cncbonnercounty@gmail.com as soon as you’ve made the observations. Include your name, your iNaturalist user name, and contact information in the body of the email. The principal organizers of the CNCBC - the ones who know where she’ll be hiding - are not eligible to win the “CNCBC 2021” Sasquatch trophies. If you find her, PLEASE be gentle with her (actually, please don’t touch her). She’ll be propped up against a tree, with a small chain around her waist. We need to make sure she makes it out of the woods in good shape for the awards ceremony (see info below).

On May 10 at 2:00 PM, the results of the CNC will be announced online. You will be able to watch the results come in real time. You’ll see the leader board, and see how the CNCBC matches up to the other challenges here:

Even though this year is more cooperation than competition due to COVID, some challenges have decided to form mini competitions. That’s what we’ve done. We’re competing with Boise and Red Lodge, MT, to see who can get the most people out per capita. All you have to do is make one observation to help Bonner County compete for the new Northern Rocky Mountain Challenge Trophy. It’s being commissioned by the good folks over in Red Lodge, and they want to win it. The winner will be able to keep it for a year, until the next CNC, and have bragging rights. So, c’mon Bonner County: download that app and help us win that trophy! If we win it, Mike Bauer of the East Bonner County Library will accept it, and it will be kept and displayed at the library, but will be rotated to different locations around the county.

Tuesday is for Birds

Countdown: 2 DAYS TO GO until the CNCBC! Have you downloaded the app and created an account? Have you been practicing? Do you think you can find Sassy and win a CNCBC 2021 Trophy? Will you help Bonner County win the inaugural Northern Rocky Mountain Challenge Trophy? You just need to make ONE observation to help Bonner County compete to see which challenge gets the most people out per capita. Get your family and friends involved, too. Children under 13 yo can use the Seek app to help identify species. Boise and Red Lodge are recruiting folks like crazy. We want the bragging rights!

Here is a list of the most endangered Birds in Bonner County. All of them have a State Rank S1: Critically imperiled because of extreme rarity or because some factor of its biology makes it especially vulnerable to extinction (typically 5 or fewer occurrences). Shockingly, there are 25 more that are listed as State Rank 2 (Imperiled because of rarity or because other factors demonstrably make it very vulnerable to extinction - typically 6 to 20 occurrences), and 36 that are State Ranked S3 (Rare or uncommon but not imperiled - typically 21 to 100 occurrences).

Do we know them? Are we going to protect them? You probably won’t see any of them, but that’s important to know, too: not only which species are present, but which ones we are in danger of losing from the ecosystem.

• Reminders:
  1) Sounds can be uploaded and serve as evidence in iNaturalist. This is particularly helpful for birds (you may not be able to see them, or get a clear photo, but you might be able to hear/record them).
  2) You don’t have to live in Bonner County to participate. So, folks from Benewah, Boundary, Clearwater, Idaho, Kootenai, Latah, Lewis, Nez Perce, and Shoshone: come help! Next year the CNCBC can become a North Idaho Challenge!
  3) Clues to Sassy’s location will be here, and on the Project Page, beginning Thursday! The trophies are cool. To qualify, send an email with CNCBC 2021 in the Subject line to cncbonnercounty@gmail.com as soon as you’ve made the observations. Include your name, your iNaturalist user name, and contact information in the body of the email. You can only win one smaller trophy, but you could also win the CNCBC Champ 2021 Trophy given to the person with the most observations. Pend Oreille Chapter of the Idaho Master Naturalists Webinar: Kootenai River Fish Restoration

-T.J. Ross, Senior Fishery Research Biologist for IDFG, conducted this presentation about the Kootenai River Fish Restoration Project on May 14, 2020. The addition of Libby Dam to the Kootenai River in NW Montana in 1972 resulted in significant negative impacts to the fisheries in the river downstream of the dam. The dam retains nutrients that previously flowed throughout the river system. In addition, levees had been added to the banks of the Kootenai River near Bonners Ferry 70-90 years ago to prevent flooding of the adjacent fields. Studies have shown that the flooded plains help young fish to grow after spawning, rather than being flushed downstream. IDFG and the Kootenai Tribe have been working to restore populations of burbot and white sturgeon. A nutrient addition project was implemented near the Montana-Idaho border in 2005, where Phosphorus and Nitrogen are injected into the river. This has improved the fisheries immediately downstream of the injection point and a second nutrient addition point is being considered near the confluence with the Moyie River. Burbot fishing was closed on the river in 1992, but with the increases in the population, burbot fishing was reopened in 2018. Need a quick review on how to what the City Nature Challenge is, and how to participate?

All you have to do is:
1) Download the free iNaturalist app (get the Seek app, too, while you’re at it).
2) Create an account (must be 13 years old).
3) Go out and take some photos of flora and fauna within Bonner County, and upload them. They will be automatically included in the CNCBC between 12:01 AM on April 30th and 11:59 PM on Monday May 3rd.

When taking photos. Remember:

1. Get closer!
2. Shoot multiple angles and images.
3. Take photos that are sharp and in focus.

The City Nature Challenge 2021: Bonner County, ID (CNCBC) is in a competition involving over 400 sites around the world. There are no prizes to win, although there will be a leader board showing how many people, observations and species are counted in each individual challenge. Regionally, Bonner County, Boise, and Red Lodge, MT have a mini competition going on. We are all competing for a newly created Northern Rocky Mountain Challenge Trophy. It will be awarded to the site that gets the most people to participate per capita. Participation involves making at least one observation and uploading it. The City Nature Challenges have, in every place they’ve been conducted, set a new baseline for nature observations. Will that be true for the three regional challenges? Here’s the baseline as of Thursday, April 29, 2021:

Locally, participants can win one CNCBC 2021 Trophy, and a CNCBC 2021 Champ Trophy.

• To win one of the CNCBC 2021 trophies, you’ll need to find Sassy, a cut-out of a Sasquatch -and- 20 unique species. She’ll be hidden in 4 different locations in Bonner County. You can only win one of these. To qualify, send an email with CNCBC 2021 in the Subject line to cncbonnercounty@gmail.com as soon as you’ve made the observations. Include your name, your iNaturalist user name, and contact information in the body of the email. The first person that does so on each day gets a trophy.
• To win the CNCBC 2021 Champ Trophy, you’ll need to make the most unique observations of different species over the 4 days of the competition.
• The trophies can be seen in a display case in the East Bonner County Library.
