Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan are at Wild Ken Hill in Norfolk as cameras capture the daily dramas of such birds as avocets and barn owls, lapwings and yellow hammers. Iolo Williams sees eye to eye with some red deer at Alladale Wilderness Reserve in Scotland, and Gillian Burke dips into the vast waters of Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland to see why it’s a great place for the bird nicknamed the sea swallow.

At the start of a research project, you define an object at the centre of your research. Simultaneously you have already an idea in which direction the research and possible results are going to be. However, during the research process, you sometimes have to realise that your previous assumptions or expectations are not met, but instead, you learn something quite different.

PhD candidate Fee Smulders from Wageningen University went to the Caribbean Sea to study the ecology of sea turtles. Instead of getting results only on the behaviour of sea turtles, she found an interesting and important connection between the behaviour of tourists and that of sea turtles. By feeding sea turtles, tourists had a great impact on the feeding and overall behaviour of sea turtles. This represents an example of the fundamental impact humans can have on their environment.
During the lecture, Fee will guide you through her research and the results, talk about solutions to protect marine animals such as sea turtles and give room for questions, your ideas and discussions.

To restore ecosystems, a rewilding approach is increasingly applied. Liesbeth Bakker, Special Professor in Rewilding Ecology at Wageningen University, addresses what science can learn from rewilding practice and how science may support the practice of ecosystem restoration.

We weten allemaal dat het goed voor ons lichaam is als we regelmatig bewegen. Maar Erik Scherder vertelt in dit college dat bewegen minstens zo belangrijk is voor je hersenen. Mensen die tussen hun vijftiende en vijfentwintigste erg actief waren, hebben op latere leeftijd veel minder last van dementie. Ook na je vijfentwintigste is bewegen -- stevig doorfietsen of doorlopen is al genoeg -- essentieel voor het functioneren van je brein. Scherder vraagt zich af: waarom zitten bejaarden dan stil in verzorgingshuizen? En waarom wordt er dan bezuinigd op gymnastiekonderwijs?

Professor Erik Scherder (1951) is als hoogleraar Klinische Neuropsychologie verbonden aan de Vrije Universiteit. Hij won meerdere keren de VU Onderwijsprijs. De jury schreef onder meer: "Erik is een van de weinige docenten waarbij studenten zo goed als alle colleges hebben gevolgd. Hoe leuk de vorige avond ook was, hoe laat het ook is geworden, de colleges van Scherder sla je niet over."

Voices for a living planet: Can migratory birds help us?

Are you interested in how monitoring birds in the Northern Netherlands can help us to
understand the connection between the local and the global. And how this can help human
society to negotiate a way to a liveable future? Then you are welcome to join this lecture held by
Theunis Piersma.

For the last 33 years Theunis Piersma has tried to bring synergy to the two ecological institutions
of the northern Netherlands, the ones at NIOZ-Texel and the University of Groningen.
Throughout, he has built on the amazing migratory biology of the shorebirds of the Wadden Sea
and the adjacent dairy farmland. After 11 years on the Chair in Animal Ecology at RUG, for 10
years he occupies the Rudi Drent Chair in Global Flyway Ecology and is a Senior Research
Leader at the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research.
