They tell me I'm a forester, but I prefer woodsman. I get to hang around some wild places and see some wild things, and every now and then I take a picture of one with my handy dandy camera phone. I have extensive experience with pulled pork BBQ, cheap domestic beer (special emphasis on Budweiser, Old Milwaukee, and Yuengling), and collard greens. I may have been born yesterday, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Right now I happen to live in a part of the country where folks are rushing to convert pine flatwoods to centipede grass, pavement, and vinyl siding. These are people who want to feel like they live in some archetype of the south but also want their live oak trees pruned, people who are horrified by anything with scales but adore invasive mute swans, people who create HOAs that fine you for allowing nature in your yard and fear any kind of fire in the woods. I like try to focus on the slivers of the natural world that these folks somehow missed, things that are right under their noses but they forgot to cover up with centipede grass and landscaping rocks. I relate to these species on a personal level-we're still hanging around but everyone would be more comfortable if we just got on out of the way and let the centipede grass take over.

My "research" also largely involves Gryllodes sigillatus and Eisenia fetida and anything that me and my team of child scientists can get to bite them on the end of a 10’ bream buster. Most days we take our sample and release them back where they came from, but on the very best days we release a few of them in cornmeal batter and 350 degree oil.

“Man always kills the thing he loves. And so we the pioneers have killed our wilderness. Some say we had to. Be that as it may, I am glad I shall never be young without wild country to be young in.” -Aldo Leopold

“And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away”-John Prine

"Fishermen, hunters, woodchoppers, and others, spending their lives in the fields and woods, in a peculiar sense a part of Nature themselves, are often in a more favorable mood for observing her, in the intervals of their pursuits, than philosophers or poets even, who approach her with expectation." -Henry David Thoreau
