Berry Springs Preserve Herps of Texas report, 19Nov2016

Six people bundled up, headed out, and looked and listened for any stalwart amphibians at Berry Springs Preserve one day after the passage of a dry cold front. We saw a Northern Cricket Frog jump along the edge of the slough on the way out to the fishing deck, but no other frogs or toads made themselves known during the monitoring period.
A Great Horned Owl was calling from the other side of the creek 17:20 - 17:35, but no bats were observed (visually or audibly) before or after sunset. The pump next to the main pond was still flowing under artesian pressure.
The monitoring period was 17:05 - 18:35.
Participants were Kathy, Nikki, Hunter & Tonja, Marc (welcome !), and Heike.
Environmental Conditions at the main pond at sunset:

  • Air temperature = 53.8 deg F (dropped into the upper 40s by the time we left)
  • Water temperature = 65.0 deg F
  • Sky = No or few clouds
  • Water level = average
  • Relative humidity at sunset = 33 %
