The Fraglile Fern is distinct from other ferns because it grows in rock crevices and ledges and tends to start smaller, pan out and then shrink in width at the tips. The leaves themselves are thinner than a sword fern.
Living in mixed coniferous/ deciduous forest in the understory reinitiating or old growth phase (last logged in 1908). Growing near sword fern, beneath large Douglas fir. Transplanted from Quilcene river in 2012, now sprawling in approx. 2 meter radius.
Near buildings and apparently introduced here, spreading from original plantings by rhizomes, the pink flowers and dark purple lower leaf surface suggesting a garden selection more than native populations of western WA
